CHILLICOTHE A CREATIVE COMMUNITY
February 12, 2016
The Missouri Arts Council recognized Chillicothe as the 2016 Missouri Arts Creative Community in a ceremony
hosted in the Rotunda of the State Capitol Building in Jefferson City on Wednesday. Carol Gregg, local
businesswoman and current president of Cultural Corner Art Guild and Gallery, was present to accept the award on
behalf of the community. A lifelong resident and dedicated supporter of local and state arts programs, Gregg led the
nomination process for this award, along with assistance from the Chillicothe Area Arts Council and Main Street
Chillicothe. "This award is a feather in our cap for tourism and highlights the thriving art environment that the citizens
of northern Missouri and the Community of Chillicothe support so
strongly," Gregg said. Last fall, the MAC announced Chillicothe as the recipient of this award, citing the dedication and support to a number of art-related activities, festivals, organizations and interests, including the Sliced Bread Jam Bluegrass Festival,
Chautauqua in the Park, our unique downtown murals, and the Cultural Corner Art Guild and Gallery. Additionally, events like the June Art Walk, Tunes Under the Moon concert series, performances at Gary Dickinson Performing Arts Center, and organizations like the North Central Missouri Writers Guild and Chillicothe Area Arts Council create the vibrant arts atmosphere that is known in Chillicothe. To commemorate this honor, 12
"Creative Community" signs will be displayed throughout the
town and are expected to go up in the coming weeks. As part of this recognition,
Chillicothe will host Missouri Citizens for the Arts for their annual meeting on June 22 and Missouri Arts Council for their quarterly meeting on June
23 with a reception to celebrate the Missouri Arts Creative Community Award the evening of June 22.
Named Missouri's 'Creative Community'
The arts' focus of several Chillicothe entities and many local individuals garnered the attention of the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency, which announced Chillicothe as the 2016 winner of the prestigious
"Creative Community Award" for the state of Missouri. In its announcement, MAC personnel recognized the city of Chillicothe as making
"profound and lasting contributions to the cultural and artistic climate of the
state" and identified Chillicothe as "a north central regional hub with a flourishing community of artists, art lovers, nonprofit organizations, and businesses that partner to create resources such as 20 huge outdoor murals, the Sliced Bread Jam Bluegrass Festival, Chautauqua in the Park, and an upcoming downtown arts
Local businesswoman Carol Gregg has severed on numerous state and local arts
boards and most recently has headed up the creation of a new hands-on Chillicothe arts organization called Cultural Corner Art Guild & Gallery.
Gregg began the efforts to apply for recognition from the state for the many arts initiatives in Chillicothe. She asked the Chillicothe Area Arts Council and Main Street Chillicothe to submit information on their
activities and combined those with the efforts of Cultural Corner to establish a strong application to the state. The contributing local entities focused on Chautauqua in the Park; Tunes Under the Moon at Silver Moon Plaza, cultural luncheons; public art in the form of 20 murals in downtown Chillicothe; the diverse programming and long history of the Chillicothe Area Arts Council; the Chillicothe Community Choir; the summer art walks; the downtown preservation efforts by Main Street Chillicothe; and the Cultural Corner Art Guild & Gallery building revitalization as an exhibit hall and art classroom space.
"Creative Community" award will be presented to Chillicothe next year on
February 10, 2016, in the Capitol Rotunda at the official ceremony for the Missouri Arts
Council's annual Missouri Arts Awards.
