The Chillicothe Mudcats pause for the singing of the national anthem at the start of their home opener Friday evening, June 2, 2017, at June Shaffer Memorial Park in Chillicothe. The Mudcats, now in their 16th season, hosted the Clarinda (Iowa), A's and came up short 6-5 in 10 innings. The Mudcats, a collegiate summer baseball team, is part of the MINK (Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas) League.

Grand River Entertainment, which organized and founded the Chillicothe Mudcats college-level, wood-bat summer baseball team in 2001, and team General Manager Doug Doughty had announced the hiring of Winters as head coach for the 2017 season earlier this year. Winters' fellow assistant coach at Centenary, Ken Durling, was hired as Mudcats 2017 assistant coach on Winters' recommendation. Winters is the pitching coach at Centenary, located in Hackettstown, N.J. He becomes the 10th head coach in the 15-years history of the Chillicothe team that plays in the MINK League of collegiate wood baseball.
