Local Elks lodge aids Simpson Park playgrounds upgrade
C-T 08 01 18

Elks Lodge No. 656 of Chillicothe, with assistance from the Elks' National Foundation's Beacon Grant program, have made a nearly $4,000 donation to the city's Parks and Recreation Department to help with the purchase and installation of special-needs playground equipment at two Simpson Park play areas.

Representatives of the lodge were on hand to assist with the installation of one of the pieces of equipment Monday morning at the playground adjacent to the baseball/softball field. That playground was heavily damaged by vandalism in the form of an arson fire, last year, Josh Norris, parks and recreation director, noted. The vandalism required the entire play area to be reconstructed and new equipment purchased and installed.

Norris said the addition of the piece the Elks assisted in buying completes the reconstruction. Two swings suitable for special needs youths were to be installed in the larger play area in the park's east side adjacent to Washington Street.

On hand for the formal presentation of a ceremonial donation check were, from left: Elks member Amie Kepner, Lodge No. 656 Exalted Ruler Brett Romeiser, Norris, and Elks members Joey Rinehart and Jim Harvey.
